6.4 How to search the internet

Level: Intermediate

Introduction

The internet contains a vast amount of information. To find this information, we use a search engine . The most popular one is Google, yet others are available (DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Yahoo, Bing, …).

To find this information, it’s important to use good search queries. In this course, we will be showing how to use the Google search engine, but most (if not all) examples can be transposed to other search engines.

Search query

A search query is the text you put in the box to search.

Google will split up the words and search for web pages that match these words.

Tip #1: Search in a concise manner

Use keywords. The more specific you are, the better the results will be.

Example: Google search example

Tip #2: Try other words

If you’ve opened a few search results and still didn’t find what you’re looking for, try using different keywords.

Tip #3: Use special symbols

If you are getting irrelevant results, remove words from the search results with the minus sign.

If Google is having a wrong interpretation of your word, or thinks you misspelled something, you can put words in double quotes . This will search for the keyword literally.
